"In a little provincial town"

- a tribute to Bobby Jaspar & Rene Thomas

For our musical tribute to Liege,
we liked the idea of putting together some of the music of Bobby Jaspar and
René Thomas with some original compositions inspired by their work.

We found in François the right person for the arranging and composing.
Here his impressions: I started collecting the recordings of Bobby Jaspar and Rene Thomas,
transcribed their compositions, and some of their improvisations in order to understand the details of their musical langage.
Writing the arrangements I tried to transpose the chamber music quality of the original recordings
into a full big band score without loosing their intimate and emotional dimension.
I also planned to give every soloist of the band a chance to con-tribute to the music of Jaspar and Thomas.
I had the chance to rehearse with the TNO and to hear the music live before getting to the studio,
so i was able to rework the scores till I was completely satisfied.
When we finaly get into the recording studio i was very impressed by the precision and finess of the ensemble work of the TNO,
and i got really thrilled by the very inspired solos of all the member of that band.
I was very happy to hear the music getting alive that way!

The jazzmusician and composer François de Ribaupierre (1972 Lausanne) has studied the clarinet,
saxophone and arrangement/composing at the “Musikhochschule Köln” and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.
François lives in Köln now, where his activities are devided in composing
and playing in several bands. He also has his own Trio and 4tet, where he can present his own writings.
